So I went back to the office yesterday. The first thing to happen on arrival was that a large security guard blocked my path at the entrance to the basement garage. "No bikes" he declared. "Any reason why?", I enquired. "Health and Safety", he replied. This was all the information I could get from him. It was a similar story at the front entrance: "You can't bring that thing in here". So no advance notice, no rational explanations. After much to-ing and fro-ing I was allowed to leave my bike in the garage of our other office across the road, and I was later assured I would have access to it the next day (we use those little security swipe cards to get in and out). So guess what happened this morning. I couldn't get in. Exactly the same runaround as yesterday. They assure me I'll have access tomorrow. We shall see...
Anyway, at least the office itself is up and running. Replacement desks (not new, but nice), new carpets, new ceiling tiles, and a bunch of French students who have been hired to scrub the walls of the stairwell with small brushes, just slightly bigger than a toothbrush. Best of all is the huge amount of old Yellow Pages, Unread "Computing" magazines, redundant manuals and old project documentation that has been cast out, never to return, thanks to smoke damage. The whole floor is actually acoustically different because so much junk has gone - it has an echo!
